Saint Peter's by the Lake Episcopal Church

A mission of the Diocese of Dallas

St. Peter’s By the Lake Episcopal Church is a mission church in the Diocese of Dallas. St. Peter’s is located in The Colony, TX, approximately 26 mile north of Downtown Dallas, on the southeast side of Lake Lewisville.

St. Peter’s By the Lake Episcopal Church was first established in October of 1987. As a mission, St. Peter’s has traveled and held services in many places in the small community of The Colony. The first services of St. Peter’s were held in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, after which the small mission began to hold services at B.B. Owens Elementary School. With a change in Priests, other changes took place; a covenant was made between Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and St. Peter’s By the Lake Episcopal Church. This became known as “Lutherans and Episcopalians Sharing (LETS),” The year was 1988. St. Peter’s also bought a house across the street from Good Shepherd, which became the church offices and Christian Ed facilities.

With both Congregations growing, in 1995 it was decided that St. Peter’s By the Lake would find its own facilities. The house was remodeled and put on the market. A storefront was rented and renovated, located at 5200 South Colony Blvd. Although the space is a storefront, once inside, the space has a look and feel of an Episcopal Sanctuary.

St. Peter’s By the Lake Episcopal Church can be described as a Protestant-Anglo-Catholic Parish where all are welcome. Protestant as in “protesting the errors of Rome,” Anglo as in origination in the Church of England, and Catholic as in “Universal and Apostolic.” St. Peter’s uses the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. The various Rites of the Prayer book are used during the church year.

The Congregation is a small-dedicated Family church that enjoys welcoming everyone to join in. Some of the annual activities include a Pentecost Sunday BBQ, where everyone is encouraged to wear red. The Colony 4th of July parade always includes a float from St. Peter’s. At Thanksgiving, a Parish dinner is served and everyone is invited. Christmas includes all the traditions, with Christmas Eve children’s services and Midnight Mass, ending the season with the Feast of Lights on Epiphany.

Some of the Ministries at St Peter’s include Acolytes, Ushers, Lay Eucharist Ministries, Lay Readers, Episcopal Church Women, Men’s Club, Saint Peters Youth (SPY), Altar Guild, and of course St. Peter’s Pipers (our Choir). This is just a few of the Ministries at St. Peter’s By the Lake Episcopal Church.
